Is there any Rule for extra attempts in JEE mains?

NTA (National Testing Agency) conducts the JEE Main exam twice yearly, most commonly in January and April. The number of attempts has been a topic of discussion for many years. In the past, there were no limits on the number of attempts. However, in 2017, the government introduced a new rule limiting the number of attempts to three times in consecutive years. This rule has been in place since then. After all, this applies to both JEE Main sessions.

What is the Three-attempt Rule in JEE Main?

The three-attempt rule means a candidate can only appear for the JEE Main exam thrice in three consecutive years. For example, if a candidate appeared for the JEE Main exam in 2022, they can appear for the exam in 2023 and 2024 but not in 2025. If a candidate appears for the exam in 2023, they can appear for the exam in 2024 and 2025 but not in 2026. This rule applies to all categories of candidates, including General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD.

Will the NTA Re-Introduce the Three-Attempt Rule?

Recently, there have been a few exceptions to the three-attempt rule in JEE Main. However, this rumour is not official yet. If the NTA decides not to re-introduce this rule, the exam’s attempt will be identical to the JEE Main 2025. In the meantime, this is what happens if the NTA introduces the three-attempt rule:

The rule does not apply to candidates who appeared for the JEE Main exam in 2022 or earlier. Such candidates can appear for the JEE Main exam in 2023, 2024, and 2025 without any restrictions on the number of attempts. However, candidates who appeared for the JEE Main exam in 2023 or later are subject to the three-attempt rule.

Another exception to the three-attempt rule is for qualifying candidates for the JEE Advanced exam. The JEE Advanced exam is the second stage of the JEE exam, and it is conducted for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). 

If candidates qualify for the JEE Advanced exam, they can appear for the JEE Main exam the following year, irrespective of the number of attempts they have already made. This means that a candidate who has already appeared for the JEE Main exam three times can still appear for the exam again if they qualify for the JEE Advanced exam.
