What is the Admission Process for IIT?  

The answer for how to get admission in IIT includes some valid qualifications. Before discussing all the vital regulations about IIT entrance, let’s discuss the exam pattern first.

Speaking of IIT entrance, the National Testing Agency supervises the entire exam routinely every year. The NTA named the entrance exam for IIT as JEE (Joint Entrance Exam). However, the entrance exam for IIT is a two-part special. The first part is JEE Main, and the second one is JEE Advanced. In order to enter an IIT, a student must qualify for both JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams with good scores.

So, what happens if we do not qualify for one of these two exams? Well, the answer is simple, a student cannot appear in JEE Advanced unless he qualified in JEE Main. However, if a student fails to qualify for either of these tests, the NTA gives them another chance in the next year to write the tests. So, a student can only have two opportunities to test their luck in entering an IIT. Also, there is a wide range of alternatives, including NITs, IIITs, and Central Universities for the Students who didn’t make it in JEE Advanced.

We can say JEE exams are all about evolution. The test regulations keep on changing according to the changes in academic calendars. So, let us take a look at some of the important and latest regulations of JEE Mains and Advanced:

1. JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams are based on only three subjects, namely, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. 

2. Each Student can appear for JEE Exams only twice in their lifetime.

3. A student can appear for JEE Main in two sessions a year. The maximum score will be considered the final score of a student.

4. A student must pass the 12th class with at least 75% marks. Besides, the students under the SC/ST category must pass out with at least 65%.

Pattern for JEE Main and JEE Advanced 

Exam pattern is the most important thing when we discuss any exam. That’s why it is necessary for you to know about the pattern of the IIT JEE exam. As you know, there are two exams for IIT entrance, JEE Main and JEE Advanced. The pattern of both exams is explained below. 

Before getting into pattern discussion, JEE Main is into three main branches. As the government of India deals with multiple facets of engineering colleges, the NTA decided to conduct three different exams for admissions in different departments. So, the students have the choice to opt for JEE Main, JEE Main for B.Planning, and JEE Main for B.Arch. All the students can sign up for all three exams, as the date of the examination and patterns are different from each other. Let us discuss the different patterns for JEE Main below:

The current pattern for JEE Main is as follows:

Mode of Examination: CBT Mode

Duration: 3 hours

Subjects: Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics

Maximum Marks: 300

Number of questions (Asked): 90 (30 questions from each subject)

Number of questions (To be Answered): 75 (25 questions from each subject)

Questions Pattern: 60 (MCQs having 4 options, each with 1 correct option) + 30 (a single Numerical Value answer)

Marking Scheme/ Negative Marking: +4 for each correct response for an MCQ; -1 for each incorrect response; Unattempted questions will not be marked. Meanwhile, +4 for each correct response for a non-MCQ/ Numerical Answer question; -1 for each incorrect response; Unattempted questions will not be marked.

The Current Pattern for JEE Main B. Planning is as follows.

Mode of Examination: CBT Mode

Duration: 3 hours

Subjects: Mathematics, Aptitude Test, and Planning Based Objective Type

Maximum Marks: 400

Number of questions (Asked): 105 (Mathematics- 30; Aptitude- 50; Planning Based-25)

Number of questions (To be Answered): 100 (Mathematics- 25; Aptitude- 50; Planning Based-25)

Questions Pattern: Maths- 20 (MCQs) + 10 (Questions for which answer is a Numerical Value) + Aptitude- 50 MCQs + Planning Based Objective Type- 25 MCQs

Marking Scheme/ Negative Marking: +4 for each correct response for MCQs; -1 for each incorrect response; Unattempted questions will not be marked. On the other hand, +4 for each correct response for non-MCQs and -1 for each incorrect response. Unattempted questions will not be marked.

The Current Pattern for JEE Main B.Arch is as follows

Mode of Examination: Mathematics and Aptitude: CBT Mode, Drawing: Pen and paper mode

Duration: 3 hours

Subjects: Mathematics, Aptitude Test, and Planning Based Objective Type

Maximum Marks: 400

Number of questions (Asked): 82 (Mathematics- 30; Aptitude- 50; Drawing- 2)

Number of questions (To be Answered): 77 (Mathematics- 25; Aptitude- 50; Drawing- 2)

Questions Pattern: Maths- 20 (MCQs) + 10 (Questions for which answer is a Numerical Value) + Aptitude- 50 MCQ + Drawing- 2 Questions 

Marking Scheme/ Negative Marking: +4 for each correct response for MCQs; -1 for each incorrect response; Unattempted questions will not be marked. Meanwhile, +4 for each correct response for non-MCQs and -1 for each incorrect response. Unattempted questions will not be marked. Finally, for drawing test consists of 2 questions with 100 marks

All the students with at least 40% disability can take 4 hours to write JEE Main exams. Also, all the students can choose their language for JEE Main between English, Hindi, Urdu, and other regional languages.

The Current Pattern for JEE Advanced is as follows.

The JEE Advanced test is a two-paper combination. All the students must write paper 1st and paper 2nd to qualify for the exam. However, the exam pattern for JEE Advanced varies each year. But the JEE Advanced exam paper is a combination of MCQs, MCQs with one or more correct options, Single correct options, Numerical value answers, and Single-digit integer answer questions. All the students can choose the language between English and Hindi for writing JEE Advanced.
