What is JEE?
JEE(Joint Entrance Examination) is a national-level entrance exam for Admission to top-tier engineering institutions in India, such as IITs, NITs, etc. The National Testing Agency administers this computer-based exam (NTA). The JEE exam is being piloted to provide Admission to qualified candidates in various engineering graduate programs such as Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Bachelor of Technology (B.T.) (B.Tech.).
Each year, NTA conducts 2 papers for JEE Mains Paper I for Admission to the Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programs. Paper II for Bachelor of Architecture(B.Arch) and Bachelor of Design(B.Des). For the JEE exam, a Candidate should have Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as Compulsory subjects in Their class 12.
Let you know there are two stages of the JEE examination: JEE Main and JEE Advance. Here you can understand JEE Main and Advance in some detail.
JEE Main:
JEE Main is a national-level entrance exam for Admission into various undergraduate engineering and architecture programs in India. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) twice a year, usually in January and April. The exam consists of two papers – Paper 1 for B.E./B. Tech courses and Paper 2 for B.Arch./B.Planning courses. The online exam consists of multiple-choice questions from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
JEE Advanced:
JEE Advanced is the second stage of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), which is conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for admission to IITs. The exam consists of two papers, each three hours long. The questions are more advanced and analytical than those in JEE Main, and the exam tests the candidates’ understanding of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Only the top 2.5 lakh candidates who qualify for JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced.
While JEE Main is a prerequisite for appearing in JEE Advanced, other engineering colleges in India also use JEE Main scores to gain admission into their undergraduate programs. On the other hand, JEE Advanced is used only for Admission into IITs.
What is NEET?
NEET, which stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, is a test that is used to provide admissions to various undergraduate medical courses (MBBS) and dental courses (BDS) in India’s government and private medical and dental colleges. NEET is a single entrance exam for over 66,000 MBBS and BDS seats across India. The National Testing Agency also administers NEET (NTA). For the NEET exam, a Candidate should have Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as Compulsory subjects in His/Her class 12.
Eligibility For NEET UG
Age Limit: The minimum age limit for NEET UG is 17 years as of December 31 of the year of Admission, and the maximum age limit is 25 years for general category candidates. There is a relaxation of 5 years in age for SC/ST/OBC and PwD candidates.

The minimum aggregate marks required for candidates in the SC/ST/OBC category are 40%. For PwD candidates, the minimum aggregate marks required are 45%.
Nationality: Candidates must be Indian nationals, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), or Foreign nationals.
It is important to note that the eligibility criteria may vary for state-level and private medical colleges. Candidates are advised to read the official information brochure carefully before applying for the exam to ensure they meet all the eligibility criteria.
How To Choose Between JEE and NEET?
Choosing between JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) and NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is a critical decision for students who aspire to pursue a career in engineering or medical fields. Both exams are highly competitive and require a significant amount of preparation. This article aims to provide insights into the differences between JEE and NEET and help students make an informed decision.
JEE is an entrance exam for engineering courses, while NEET is for medical courses. JEE is divided into two main parts – JEE Main and JEE Advanced. JEE Main is conducted for admission to undergraduate engineering courses, while JEE Advanced is conducted for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other prestigious engineering colleges. NEET, on the other hand, is conducted for admission to undergraduate medical courses, including MBBS and BDS.
One critical difference between JEE and NEET is the syllabus. The JEE syllabus includes Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, while the NEET syllabus includes Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Therefore, students who are interested in engineering and have a strong foundation in mathematics should opt for JEE. In contrast, students who are interested in medical science and are good at biology should opt for NEET.
Another difference is the difficulty level of the exams. JEE and NEET are highly competitive, but JEE is considered more challenging than NEET. The JEE exam is known for its tough questions that require analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a deep understanding of concepts. NEET, on the other hand, is more straightforward and relies on memorisation and application of concepts.
The eligibility criteria for JEE and NEET also differ. To appear for JEE, students must have completed their 10+2 education in the science stream, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. In contrast, for NEET, students must have completed their 10+2 education in the science stream, with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as compulsory subjects.
When deciding Between JEE and NEET, students should consider their career aspirations. Engineering and medical fields are highly rewarding, but they require different skill sets and career paths. Students who enjoy problem-solving and are interested in technology and innovation should opt for JEE. In contrast, students who enjoy working with people and are passionate about medicine should opt for NEET.
In conclusion, choosing between JEE and NEET is a crucial decision for students who aspire to pursue a career in engineering or medical fields. Students should consider factors such as their interests, skills, and career aspirations, as well as the syllabus, difficulty level, and eligibility criteria when making a decision. With proper research and guidance, students can make an informed decision and choose the exam that aligns with their goals and aspirations.
You can also choose between JEE and NEET by checking the following points.
- JEE Main is designed to prepare students for careers in engineering. If you want to build your career in Engineering, you should go for JEE without keeping a Second thought in mind.
- NEET is used to gain Admission to medical school and pursue a career in the Medical field. If you want to build your career in Medical, you opt for NEET without keeping a Second thought in your mind.
- You should completely rely on your interest in biology and math. If you have an interest in Biology, you should opt for NEET, and if you have an interest in Mathematics, you should opt for JEE.
- One should not choose a course based on the marks one received on one’s Matriculation Exam, but rather on one’s aptitude for the subject.
- Before deciding between JEE and NEET, you can watch YouTube videos about the lives of engineering and medical students to see what interests you the most and then choose that field.
- You should not opt for JEE and NEET only because of the pressure from your parents.
- You should hear your inner voice before choosing between JEE and NEET, as you will only have to face those challenges that will come later.
- Also, you should have some conversations with your elders who are already pursuing careers in these two fields.
Conclusion
So, now we can conclude that both the entrance exams vary based on their career, subjects, and exam pattern. NEET is the pathway to the medical stream, and JEE is for engineering courses. NEET is slightly more difficult than JEE Main because seats are more limited in NEET, making it more competitive.
Aside from that, the syllabuses of the two papers are very similar to those of Physics and Chemistry. As a result, aspirants must thoroughly understand all subjects. But, in the end, it entirely depends on one’s preferences, career goals, interests, and expertise. You can also prepare for both the JEE and the NEET exams at the same time by putting in long hours of study and smart revision.
