Unlike other competitive tests, the Homi Bhabha Scholarship Exam tests the practical knowledge of a student along with theoretical learning. However, the process of this exam is quite unique and a few students get confused with it! Hence, we are here to explain each and every important detail of the upcoming Dr Homi Bhabha Exam. What is Dr Homi Bhabha’s Exam?

Since 1981, the Greater Bombay Science Teachers’ Association has been conducting the Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition. The main focus of this test is to foster the young mind’s curiosity, problem-solving skills, and precision in young scientists. This annual test is a great opportunity for 6th and 9th-grade students to showcase the scientific knowledge and skills that they have learned and mastered in the previous grades.   

Each year, Roughly 75,000 students appear for this Exam. Homi Baba’s unique four-stage exam process stimulates a clear understanding of science concepts and makes a strong foundation for students. After all, this exam aims to nurture young scientific minds and promote a deeper understanding of science concepts.

Homi Bhabha Exam eligibility?

Students in the 6th and 9th grades are eligible to participate in Homi Bhabha Olympiad. The exam will be conducted in only two languages: English and Marathi mediums. Besides, students from all boards, including Maharashtra SSC, CBSE, ICSE, IB, and other state boards, can participate in the HB Olympiad.

Note: Students from Semi-English divisions can choose either English or Marathi medium based on their preference. Students do not have any option to change the language in further stages of the exam once they select the medium. So, the language of the exam remains the same for all further stages of the competition according to GBSTA.

List of Examination Centres for Dr.Homi Bhabha Exam:

The GBSTA conducts the competition in multiple examination centers all over Maharashtra and other regions of India. Here is the list of examination centers:

  • MUMBAI: Mumbai and Mumbai Suburban.
  • THANE: Thane, Palghar, Raigad.
  • PUNE: Pune, Solapur, Ahmadnagar.
  • NASHIK: Nashik, Dhule, Jalgaon, Nandurbar.
  • KOLHAPUR: Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Ratnagiri & Sindhudurg.
  • SAMBHAJINAGAR: Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Hingoli, Parbhani.
  • VIDHARBH: Akola, Buldhana, Amravati, Washim, Yavatmal, Wardha, Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Gadchiroli, Chandrapur.
  • LATUR: Beed, Latur, Osmanabad, Nanded.

All the registered schools outside Maharashtra can conduct the exam in their own premises if a minimum of 50 students are registered from the school. Otherwise, the center will be in Maharashtra. The students have to select their top 3 preferences from the list of cities in Maharashtra provided.

Homi Bhabha Exam Syallbus 

Dr. Homi Baba focuses on critical understanding, reasoning, and correlation types of content instead of knowledge-based questions. The majority of questions in the exam mainly come from Maharashtra State Board science textbooks. Besides, the GBSTA might also include relevant content from ICSE, IB, and CBSE science textbooks. In addition, the students can also expect questions related to general science knowledge and its applications in daily life.

Syllabus for 6th-Grade Applicants: 

For 6th-grade students, the syllabus includes material from the 4th, 5th, and 6th standard textbooks of the Maharashtra State Board, as well as content from ICSE, IB, and CBSE books. The distribution of questions is as follows:

a) About 10% of the questions are based on the 4th standard syllabus.

b) Roughly 20% of the questions relate to the 5th standard syllabus.

c) The majority, approximately 60%, are from the 6th standard syllabus.

d) Around 10% of the questions focus on general science knowledge.

Syllabus for 9th-Grade Applicants: 

Likewise, for 9th-class students, the syllabus includes material from the 7th, 8th, and 9th standard textbooks of the Maharashtra State Board, along with relevant content from ICSE, IB, and CBSE books. The distribution of questions is as follows:

a) Around 10% of the questions are based on the 7th standard syllabus.

b) Roughly 20% of the questions relate to the 8th standard syllabus.

c) The majority, approximately 60%, are from the 9th standard syllabus.

d) Around 10% of the questions focus on general science knowledge.

Homi Bhabha Exam Pattern

Here is the detailed exam pattern for Dr Homi Bhabha Exam:

For 6th-Grade

Phase One- Written Examination: During this phase, candidates will sit for a 90-minute test featuring a 100-mark multiple-choice question paper. There is no penalty for incorrect answers. (Minimum marks for the students to be eligible for practical phase is estimated to be between 60 and 64 marks.)

Phase Two- Practical Assessment: In this Phase, the students will engage in 5 experiments, each worth 6 marks, covering various science topics. The total possible score is 30, and the duration is 30 minutes. 

Phase Three- Project: o be eligible for this phase, 30% of the marks obtained in both the written and practical tests are taken into account. The top 10% of students qualify for the third phase (Projects). Upon reaching this phase, all students are eligible to receive a Gold, Silver, or Bronze medal. The students have to do the project on the given topic.

Phase Four- Interview: All students who submit project reports are invited for interviews. They will be assessed by a panel of MSTA Committee members.

For 9th Grade:

Phase One- Written Examination: During this phase, candidates will sit for a 90-minute test featuring a 100-mark multiple-choice question paper. There is no penalty for incorrect answers. (The students have to score a minimum of estimated marks in between 45 and 55 marks to be eligible for Phase 2.)

Phase Two- Practical Assessment: In this Phase, the students will engage in 5 experiments, each worth 6 marks, covering various science topics. The total possible score is 30, and the duration is 30 minutes. 

Phase Three- Project: The top 10% selected for this phase are selected by considering 30% of the marks obtained in both the written and practical tests. Upon reaching this phase, all students are eligible to receive a Gold, Silver, or Bronze medal. The students have to do the project on the given topic.

Phase Four- Interview: All students who submit project reports are invited for interviews. They will be assessed by a panel of MSTA Committee members.

How to Register for Homi Bhabha Exam?

To register for the Homi Bhabha Olympiad, students have the option to register for the competition online, either through their school or individually. Besides, it is important to note that registration through private classes or academies is strictly prohibited.

Student Registration Through Already Registered School:

  1. Visit www.msta.in and click on ‘Apply online for Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition’.
  2. Log in using last year’s School Login ID and Password.
  3. Edit the school profile and select three preferred centers from the dropdown list.
  4. After filling in all the details correctly, click on ‘AGREE AND SUBMIT’.
  5. Proceed to pay the student fees. The amount will be calculated automatically based on the number of students.
  6. Complete the payment process through the Razorpay payment gateway.
  7. After the fees are paid, log out and re-login after half an hour. Then, click on ‘Add Students’ to register them one by one.

Note: Students can order authentic books for the competition, priced at Rs. 250 each that can be included while registration. Also, there is no correction window available, the students can replace and chage the student information, including student photos, until the last date of registration.

New School Registration:

  1. Visit www.msta.in and click on ‘Apply online for Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition’.
  2. If your school was not registered last year, click on ‘New School Registration’ and fill in all the school details accurately.
  3. Provide the complete postal address of the school, including the pin code.
  4. Select three preferred centers from the dropdown list.
  5. Your login ID and password will be displayed on the screen and sent to the in-charge teacher’s mobile number via SMS and emailed to the school.
  6. Similar to the process for registered schools, proceed to pay the student fees and order books if necessary.
  7. Complete the payment process through the Razorpay payment gateway.
  8. After the fees are paid, log out and re-login after half an hour. Then, click on ‘Add Students’ to register them one by one.

Individual Student Registration:

  1. Visit www.msta.in and click on ‘Apply online for Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition’.
  2. Click on ‘New Individual Registration’.
  3. Enter your mobile number in the appropriate boxes and verify it using the OTP received.
  4. Fill in the student’s details accurately.
  5. Upload the student’s passport-size photo and school bonafide certificate. Failure to upload these documents will result in incomplete registration.
  6. Optionally, order authentic books for the competition, priced at Rs. 250 each.
  7. Complete the payment process through the Razorpay payment gateway.
  8. Upon successful registration, you will receive an SMS and email confirmation.
  9. You can log in using your registered mobile number and OTP to view your registered data and results.

Important Note: No replacements are allowed for absent candidates, and the fees once paid are non-refundable. On-the-spot entries and no rechecking of papers will be entertained at any stage of the competition.

Homi Bhabha Exam 2024

Homi Baba Exam 2024 follows the ame exam pattern as the past exams. However, the 2023-24 homi baba olympiad exam is currently going on with wrtten test already completed successfully. The 2023-24 homi baba exam will be concluded by April 2024. Then the official notification for Homi Baba Exam 2024 will be released.
